Children’s Feature for Mother’s Day: Hadiza’s Story

“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne?” Isaiah 49:15

All-Age Story
All over the world, there are mothers just like the mothers you know. They love their children, take care of them, and want the best for them. They try their hardest to make sure their children are safe and have enough good food to eat, good lessons to learn, and fun games to play.

In Niger, a country in Africa, there is a mother named Hadiza. She has a very large family. She takes care of 20 people, including some nieces and nephews! Feeding that many people can be very difficult for her and her husband, Mohammed.

Like in your home, Hadiza and Mohammed want to provide good food for their children. But in Niger, like many other places around the world, it can be hard for parents to find enough good food for their children. Sometimes there is not enough rain, or too much rain, and the crops die. They do what they can, but sometimes there isn’t enough money to buy the food they need.

Hadiza joined a women’s group supported by Canadian Foodgrains Bank so she could learn ways to save money to start a business. She took her savings and opened a small shop where she sells rice and masa, a pancake-like breakfast food made out of millet. She also works with the group to grow vegetables and dry them in the sun, so they can be saved for times when there might not be enough food to eat. Now Hadiza has enough food and makes enough money to feed her large family! Let’s pray that other mothers like her can also find ways to provide food for their families.

Prayer
Creator, God. Thank you for mothers. Thank you for grandmothers and aunts and sisters and all the wonderful women who take care of us. Thank you for the food we eat and the schools we go to and all the fun games we play. Give food to people in the world who do not have enough to eat. Be with all the mothers in the world who work so hard to take care of their children. Amen.
